Log is the natural choice for building in the densely forested and sparsely populated town of Pudasjärvi in Northern Finland. Pudasjärvi with its 8200 inhabitants is the world leader in modern log construction. The world’s largest modern log-constructed school campus (2016), day care center (2013) and assisted living residence for the elderly (2016), among others, are all here in Pudasjärvi, not to mention Kontio, the world leader in log house manufacturing. Thus the log capital of Finland. The log house selection is widened by a variety of traditional and modern buildings, from the old church and the museum to modern homes and holiday homes. The log capital attract visitors from all over the world.
The new public log buildings are made of industrial single material log without extra insulation. Log surfaces are left uncovered also indoors – log inside out. Experiences from these constructions are thoroughly positive. The buildings are warm, energy efficient and acoustically excellent, the indoor air quality is pleasant and the users really like the buildings. There are only good reasons to build from log.
Pudasjärvi has adopted the principle to build all new public buildings from log when possible. The next project will be a sports and culture arena with for instance an ice rink and a library. The town strategy aims at fortifying the business environment to create an even stronger business ecosystem around log construction.
